Ian, unfortunately I do not know how to contact your email address thus have to use this forum.
What is concerning to me is your allowing home owners to advertise rental vs traditional house sitting, i.e. for us hs's to care for a pet(s); interior/yard maintenance.

I draw your attention to listing posted Nov. 10th/09 Victoria (Esquimalt), B.C. "BC Kayaker". Strictly rental ($400 @ month. No pet(s) to care for, plants to water, etc. They have advertised before. Craigslist or a home rental website would be more appropriate for them!
Thank you for this opportunity Ian. My wife and I have had many pleasant experiences over the past 2.5 years.

Is it customary to have the owners there on occasion?
Is it customary to have them give you daily duties... when they are their or not?
Is it customary for them to expect to meet you first from a long distance?

I just joined and am looking at this as an awesome opportunity to complete some education online, visit new places and meet new people. I posted my ad, e-mailed several I would be interested in hearing more, addressing their concerns in their ad. A couple of the replies seemed like they're actually looking for a live in house keeper / cook / animal caregiver - while they are at the home or in and out on various days. And a couple have stated the desire of meeting me before hand? - No - , I wont be traveling hundreds or thousands of miles for an interview.

Please don't misunderstand, I would consider these options at a weekly small pay and dependent on time constraints. As I had my own agenda for wanting to change my life also. I thought the house sitting idea was slightly different.

If someone with some experience could offer some help to a newbie with a few of these questions before I get myself into a situation.. that would be great. Thank you

Hi There
We have just finished our second housesit and it has left us with a very bitter taste. We agreed to housesit in Adelaide for 3 months looking after a dog. The owner requested a bond and that we also pay the electricity and gas.

On their return we had to leave immediately for Darwin for our next housesit. A week later we phoned the owners to find out why they had not put the money into our account. He had the audicity to ask us whether we were desperate for the money (obvisiously he had spent it) and also said we had to pay an extra $30 for sewerage and water. While we agreed to the electricity and gas cost this was just over the top.

Reading this email now it has stupid, stupid, stupid written all over us. We will never again agree to pay a bond or any utility costs in future. We walked and groomed this guy's dog every day, repaired his crappy pergola so it wouldn't blow down in the wind, mowed his lawn every week and kept his high maintenance garden weed free.

We have now received the bulk of the bond back but not all. I hope others will learn from our naive and trusting attitude. Our first housesit was fantastic but not our second. We start our Darwin housesit on Thursday so hope it goes a lot better.

I have looked for an email address for Ian but am unable to locate it.

Cheers
Elwynn

I have now seen lots of adverts here for sitting in a "currently being restored" villa or farmhouse often in France or Italy. The story is mostly all the same, main house is under renovation, the caretaker cottage has been completed, etc..

There is typically no pets, but there is generally an expectation that the sitter will undertaken projects from carpentry, to mason work, to painting.

Has anyone ventured into this type of sit, and if so, what have been your experiences?

I have been house sitting in new zealand and australia full time for nearly 3 years , i started as a companion for my sister who has since returned to the uk. My problem is i do prefer having company on sits particularily if they are rural or isolated as i am a social person and like having someone around to talk to. Also i feel it would increas the number of options available to the sitters, I would appreciate others thoughts on this subject. thanks SID Rose,
